Simulator Guide — Room Planning
Golf Simulator Room Requirements (2026)
Ceiling height, room width, depth, and everything else you need to know before buying a simulator.
Getting the room wrong is the most expensive mistake you can make with a golf simulator. Buy the equipment first, then discover the ceiling's too low or the bay's too narrow, and you're either returning products or doing expensive renovation work. This guide covers everything upfront.
These are the real-world requirements for a functional home simulator — based on the enclosures and monitors we sell. Numbers vary slightly by product, but these cover the vast majority of setups.
Minimum Room Dimensions
Ceiling Height
9 feet (2.7m) minimum. 10ft is comfortable. Anything under 9ft will restrict your swing arc for driver and irons.
Room Width
12 feet (3.6m) minimum. 15ft is ideal. Allows full swing without risk of clipping the side walls.
Room Depth
15 feet (4.6m) minimum from hitting position to screen. 18-20ft gives more projector placement flexibility.
Hitting Position
You need at least 5ft behind the hitting mat to the back wall. This is your swing clearance — don't compromise on it.
How Room Size Affects Each Component
Enclosure Sizing
Carl's Place DIY kits are custom-sized. Standard builds are 10x10 or 12x10. Bigger room = bigger screen = better experience.
Projector Placement
Short-throw projectors (like BenQ LH820ST at 0.69:1) can sit 8-10ft from the screen. Ultra short-throw (0.5:1) works in tighter rooms.
Overhead Launch Monitors
Uneekor EYE XO and XO2 require ceiling mounting 9-10ft above the floor, directly above the hitting position. 10ft ceiling strongly preferred.
Floor-Based Launch Monitors
Units like the ES Tour Plus, Garmin R50, and NVISAGE N1 sit on the floor or on a stand. No ceiling height requirement — just floor space.
Hitting Mat Placement
The mat needs to be flush with the floor or on a flat surface. For side-mounted monitors, mat orientation matters — check manufacturer specs.
Cable Management
Plan for power to the projector mount (ceiling or wall), HDMI from computer to projector, and any network drops if you're running wired.
Setup Types and Space Requirements
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Setup Type | Min Width | Min Height | Min Depth | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DIY enclosure + floor LM | 12ft | 9ft | 15ft | Most common home setup |
| DIY enclosure + overhead LM | 12ft | 10ft | 15ft | Overhead mount needs extra ceiling height |
| Carl's Curved enclosure | 16ft | 9.5ft | 18ft | Panoramic screen needs more width |
| Projector on stand (no ceiling) | 12ft | 9ft | 15ft | Stand adds flexibility |
| Commercial HD Golf | 16ft+ | 10ft+ | 20ft+ | Full professional installation |
Flooring Recommendations
Hard flooring (concrete, hardwood, vinyl) is best for simulator rooms. Carpet compresses under the hitting mat and can affect launch monitor accuracy on some models. If you have carpet, use a firm rubber base under the mat to stabilise it.
Concrete (best)
Ideal base. Flat, firm, no compression. Use a landing pad or mat system directly on concrete.
Hardwood / Vinyl
Good option. Firm enough for accurate monitor placement. Use a landing pad to protect the floor.
Carpet (acceptable)
Works but add a firm rubber base under the mat. Thick pile carpet can slightly affect floor-based monitor angles.
Landing Pad
The SIG10 Landing Pad ($1,198.99) and HomeCourse Landing Pad ($250) protect flooring and keep the mat stable.
Lighting and Acoustics
Control ambient light if possible. Projectors perform best in darker conditions — blackout blinds make a significant difference. For acoustics, simulator bays get loud. Adding foam panels or carpet wall panels reduces echo and makes sessions more comfortable for extended use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a golf simulator fit in a garage?
Yes, most standard garages (20ft deep, 12-20ft wide) are suitable for a simulator. The key constraint is ceiling height — most residential garages have 8-9ft ceilings. 9ft minimum is workable, 10ft is better.
What ceiling height do I need for an overhead launch monitor?
Uneekor overhead monitors (EYE XO, EYE XO2, EYE XR) need to mount 9-10ft above the floor. A 10ft ceiling is the practical minimum. This rules them out of many standard 8ft ceiling rooms.
How much width do I need on each side of the hitting position?
At least 5ft either side of the hitting mat for a full swing with driver. Most enclosures position the mat centrally in the frame, so room width directly determines side swing clearance.
Do I need a dedicated room or can I share the space?
You can share the space. The enclosure protects the screen and structures the sim area. Retractable screens exist if you want to fold the setup away, though most permanent builds use a fixed enclosure.
What's the minimum room depth for a projector?
With a short-throw projector like the BenQ LH820ST (throw ratio 0.69:1), you can get a 10ft wide image from about 7ft away. Room depth of 15ft total (including hitting position) is comfortable for most standard short-throw setups.
