Golf Simulator Flooring, Turf and Installation: Plan the Bay From the Ground Up

Golf simulator installation should be planned as one system: room dimensions, hitting position, enclosure, screen, launch monitor, projector, power, cabling, flooring and final calibration all affect one another. Flooring is easy to leave until the end, but it should be decided near the beginning because it changes hitting height, screen alignment and cable routes.

    Give each layer a job

A practical bay usually has more than one surface. The subfloor provides a level, stable base. Turf creates a finished playing area and can carry balls toward a return zone. The hitting mat or replaceable strike insert is the surface that takes repeated swings. Screen, stance mat and putting surface should all meet at predictable heights so the room feels intentional rather than pieced together.

    Start with the hitting position

Set the intended hitting position before choosing turf thickness or building a platform. It influences the launch monitor’s placement, the golfer’s eye line to the screen, and the clearance a player feels through the swing. If the hitting surface sits above the surrounding floor, plan a smooth transition so the player can step in and out naturally.

Match the surface to how the room will be used

    • Dedicated simulator room: prioritise a stable hitting area, a tidy turf run-out and easy cable management.
    • Shared garage or basement: consider modular or retractable pieces that can be moved or protected when the room changes use.
    • Commercial bay: prioritise durable materials, replaceable wear surfaces, clear walking routes and cleaning between sessions.
    • Putting-focused space: use a surface designed for roll and plan the height transition between putting turf and the hitting area.

    Installation order that avoids rework

    1. Measure the room and mark the screen, tee position and monitor location.
    2. Resolve power, data and lighting before the turf is down.
    3. Level or prepare the subfloor, then establish the final hitting height.
    4. Install enclosure, impact screen and display equipment around that fixed geometry.
    5. Lay turf and finish edges after you know every component clears correctly.
    6. Test a full swing, projector sight line and ball path before final trimming or fastening.

    Common mistakes

The usual problems are buying turf before confirming the finished hitting height, raising the player without checking ceiling clearance, hiding cables where they cannot be serviced, or treating the hitting mat as interchangeable with the surrounding turf. Solve those details on paper before materials arrive.

    Next step

Read the golf simulator hitting mat guide, browse hitting mats and turf, and use the Room Planner to check the equipment around your actual space.
