The numbers behind it

Minimum vs ideal room dimensions

Getting the room wrong is the most expensive mistake in a simulator build. These are the working figures the planner uses, based on the enclosures and monitors we install.

Dimension Absolute minimum Comfortable Why it matters
Ceiling height 9 ft 10 ft Below 9 ft restricts the swing arc for driver and long irons. Overhead launch monitors need 10 ft.
Room width 12 ft 15–16 ft Full swing clearance without clipping side walls; curved screens need 16 ft+.
Room depth 15 ft 18–20 ft Tee-to-screen distance plus swing clearance and projector throw room.

Common questions

Golf simulator room planning FAQ

What is the minimum ceiling height for a golf simulator?

9 feet is the practical minimum for a full swing with driver and long irons. 10 feet is comfortable and is also the threshold for overhead ceiling-mounted launch monitors. Below 9 feet, taller golfers will feel the ceiling on the backswing and follow-through.

Can a golf simulator fit in a garage?

Most standard garages work for depth and width. The usual constraint is ceiling height — many residential garages sit at 8–9 ft. At 9 ft you can run a floor or side-mounted launch monitor; for an overhead monitor you'll want a 10 ft ceiling.

Do I need an overhead or a floor-based launch monitor?

If your ceiling is 10 ft or higher, an overhead unit keeps the floor completely clear and is ideal for a permanent room. Under 10 ft, a floor or side-mounted monitor is the better fit and works in far more spaces.

How much room do I need on each side?

Around 5 ft of clearance either side of the hitting position for a full swing. Most enclosures center the mat in the frame, so your room width directly sets your side clearance.
